Subaru has used both timing belts and timing chains. The correct answer depends on the engine family and model year, not simply the badge on the boot.
Older EJ engines
Many EJ-series Subaru engines use a timing belt, making age and kilometre-based belt maintenance important. Related idlers, the tensioner and water pump are commonly assessed at the same time.
Later FB and FA engines
Many later FB and FA engines use timing chains. A chain is not a routine belt-replacement item, but oil quality, tensioners, guides and engine condition still matter.
How we identify it
We identify the vehicle by VIN, engine code and build information before quoting timing work. This avoids applying a generic interval or repair package to the wrong engine.
